Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does sponsoring a family mean?

A: When you sponsor a family, you are treating this family as if they were your own on Christmas. We ask our sponsors to provide their families with wrapped presents that they can enjoy over the holidays. You can spend as much or as little as you want – and you will be provided with their Christmas “wish list” at least four weeks before Christmas.   To give an idea, we recommend $30-$50 per child and we consider a child anyone who is 18 years old or younger.  No adults are included unless you choose to do so on your own.  You will have the option of personally delivering these presents to your adopted family, or you can have them delivered on your behalf by one of our team members.

When you sponsor a family, you’ll be provided with a “family fact sheet” with all of the information you need about the family.  It will tell you who nominated them to our program, how many children (under 18) are in their family, their sizes and a small list of gift suggestions for each family member.  You can then take it upon yourself to go Christmas shopping for the family, wrap their presents and personally deliver to them.

Q: How are these families selected to be a part of A.A.O.K.?

A: All families are selected through our community partners, which in most cases are elementary schools, medical organizations, local homeless shelters, local churches, teachers and other reputable members of the community.  These organizations and members are hand selected by A.A.O.K. and a list of them can be found on our website on the “Community Partners” page.

Q: How much should I spend on the family that I sponsor?

A: As a sponsor, you have no monetary obligation to any gift, item or request on the family fact sheet.  The budget per family and gift items will be at your discretion.  We suggest a minimum donation of $30.00 – $50.00 per family member.

Q: Should I purchase gifts for the adults in the family?

A:  No.  As a sponsor please do not feel obligated to purchase gifts for anyone in the household over the age of 18 years old.  There are a lot of circumstances where a family has multiple children and one or two are over the age of 18.  If you’d like to shop for those individuals you are more than welcome to, but ever family has been told that no adults over the age of 18 will be included in the program.

Q: When will I receive my family fact sheet?

A: We make a strong effort to distribute family fact sheets as soon as possible, giving our sponsors ample amount of time to prepare for the holidays.  In most cases we spend all of September and October gathering and preparing information and aim to pass on that information early to mid November.  We will always distribute fact sheets before Thanksgiving Day / Black Friday so that you can properly prepare.  If you signed up before Thanksgiving and don’t hear from us by then, please contact us immediately.

If you signed up on our website after Thanksgiving day, you are automatically placed on a “waiting list”.  Please give us up to five (5) days to review your application.  In most cases you will be approved and receive an approval notification via email.  We then ask for another five (5) days or so to assign a family to you and send you a “family fact sheet”.  Please note, these are general guidelines and we aim to get you information on your family as soon as possible to ensure you have enough time to prepare.

Q: If I have questions about the fact sheet, who should I call?

A: If you have any questions or if your fact sheet is missing any information as far as sizes, etc., we urge you to contact the family directly.  This will reduce the amount of calls and emails we receive since there are over 100 of you!  If you need to call them, simply introduce yourself and let them know that you will be sponsoring them through our program this year.  Most of the families have been informed that they have been accepted into our program, but in the rare case that they haven’t, please be prepared to tell them a little bit about yourself and why you are calling.  If you speak to them, please be sure to confirm their address for delivery purposes (please send us any updated information).  If you need our assistance translating or with anything else, please contact us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.  We have volunteers manning the email address “questions@aaokvegas.com” from Thanksgiving until December 31st.

Q: How should I address the gifts?  Who should I say they are from?

A: That’s entirely up to you!  Some people like to leave their name, the family’s name, their company’s name…or, if there are young children in the family and you prefer to stay anonymous, feel free to address the gifts from “Amazing Acts of Kindness” or “Santa.”  We’ll leave that entirely up to you!

Q: We would like to bring our family food and / or a Christmas tree, is that okay?

A: Yes!  These families are in need and I’m sure it would be much appreciated.  We always recommend checking with the family first, in case they already have a tree or other arrangements for dinner.

Q: Where and when should we deliver gifts?

A: When you signed up to sponsor a family, you indicated whether you would like to deliver gifts to the family directly or if you wanted a member of A.A.O.K. to deliver them for you.  Here are two answers to this question, depending on which option you chose:

If you are delivering gifts yourself: please contact the family directly to make delivery arrangements.  Please verify their address.  We always recommend meeting in a public place if possible and never delivering gifts alone.  Always delivery during the daytime, before the sun goes down.  Please remember a lot of these families live in tough, low income areas.

If you would like us to deliver for you: we will have a dedicated location for all of our sponsors to drop off gifts for their families on Christmas Eve between the hours of 10am and 2pm.  We’ll have volunteers with trucks pick up the gifts and deliver them to the families on your behalf.  If you are unable to drop your gifts off on Christmas Eve due to being out of town or other scheduling conflicts, please contact us so we can make special arrangements for you.  We will send the delivery location out via email no later than December 15th.  We appreciate your patience as the delivery drop location changes every year.
